How to load a template in Darkroom Booth
In Darkroom Booth you build the template inside Booth: start a new blank template, set the page size at 300 pixels per inch, bring in the background and then the overlay PNG, place the photo frames, and save.
What you need
- The overlay PNG with clear photo windows and a background image.
- The size in pixels: inches multiplied by 300. A 2x6 strip is 600 x 1800. See the size table.
The steps
- Start a blank template. Open Booth and create a new blank template.
- Set the page size. Use the print size at 300 pixels per inch, for example 600 x 1800 for a 2x6 strip. Darkroom's help center gives the rule: inches multiplied by 300.
- Bring in the graphics. Import the background first and the overlay PNG second, so the overlay sits on top of the photos. Imaging Spectrum describes the same workflow: a blank template, then the background, footer and overlay.
- Place the photo frames and the text. Position each frame under a window in the overlay, and add live text for names and the date if you want them to change per event.
- Save the template and test it. Save, then run a test session and a test print before the event.
Why you build it instead of importing it
Imaging Spectrum says most users do not import templates into Booth but create them there. Booth stores the graphics and the fonts a template uses in one single file, which makes the finished template easy to move and share. So the one-time job is the build above, and after that you reuse the saved template.
Transparent graphics
Anything that needs a transparent background, such as a logo or curved text, should be saved as a PNG before you bring it into Booth. The overlay already is one.

How this page was checked
Checked against Darkroom's help center and Imaging Spectrum's Darkroom Booth guide on October 13, 2026. We have not yet run these exact steps on a current Darkroom Booth install with a downloaded set, so menu names may differ on your version: look for the same word. When we have, this box will say which version and what date.
Questions
- Can I import a dslrBooth template into Darkroom Booth?
- Yes, but you rebuild it in Booth. Imaging Spectrum says templates from other programs can be used, though most people create them in Booth rather than import them. Open a blank template, bring in the background and the overlay from the files, and save it.
- What size should a Darkroom Booth template be?
- Inches multiplied by 300 pixels per inch: 600 x 1800 for a 2x6 strip, 1800 x 1200 for a 4x6 landscape print and 2100 x 1500 for a 5x7 landscape print.
- What file types can I add to a Darkroom template?
- Imaging Spectrum says a graphic that needs a transparent background, such as a logo or curved text, should be saved as a PNG for use in Booth. The overlay is a PNG for the same reason. The page does not list other formats, so check Booth's help for the full list.
- Where does Darkroom keep the template's fonts and graphics?
- In one single file. Imaging Spectrum says Darkroom stores the graphics and the fonts a template uses together, which makes the template easier to move and share than software that needs several files with exact names.
- Do I need to rebuild the template for every event?
- No. Build and save it once, then reuse it. If you add the names and the date as live text in Booth, you only retype them for the next event. Or change them in the layered PSD and bring in the new overlay.
